Whangarei Hospital Theatres Expansion

Argon constructed a new building at Whangarei Hospital to expand the hospital’s theatre capacity. In addition to the two new operating theatres, there are sterile set-up rooms, scrub rooms, sterile stores, staff changing rooms and patient recovery spaces. New, self-contained plant is located in an undercroft below. The new wing is connected to the existing operating theatre building via a closed-in walkway.

The site’s location within the main public carpark, adjacent to live operating theatres, required careful management, clear communication with facilities, and tailoring of processes and procedures to minimise impact on staff, patients and the public.

This included a refined pile methodology for the 13-metre-deep piles required, to avoid impacting the nearby operating theatres. Careful traffic management was necessary for the delivery of machinery and materials.
